Alice I. Barkema, 86, Belmond, died December 23, 2006 at the Belmond Health Care Center. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 27 at Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond with Pastor Phil Arnold officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Alice Irene, daughter of Harry and Laura (Ruka) Sorenson, was born March 26, 1920 in Owatonna, MN. Her parents moved to Belmond and farmed west of town where Alice attended country school. She graduated from Belmond High School. She was married on October 14, 1941, and her son, Richard Peddicord, was born in 1943. Alice married Arnold (Greek) Barkema at the Little Brown Church on February 5, 1955. Alice and Greek farmed together for twenty-five years, retiring in 1980. They built a home on the Belmond golf course. Alice enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and wintering in the south. In the summer she and Greek enjoyed traveling (Canada, Europe). She was an avid antique collector. Alice was a member of Immanuel Reformed Church. Her greatest joy was watching her two great grandchildren in all their activities while they were growing up.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Harold and Donnell Sorenson. Alice is survived by her husband; son Rich (Cec) Peddicord of Belmond; grandchildren Annette (Sam) Hargadine of Iowa City, Tammy (Mike) Schimp of Hampton and Mitch Peddicord of Kansas City; great-grandchildren Bryce and Molly Schimp; and brothers Lewis (Alice) Sorenson of Dayton, OH and Lyle (IdaMay) Sorenson of Belmond.
