Hilda Withers Crandall

Twin Falls - Hilda Crandall, 93-year-old Twin Falls resident and long time Rupert resident, was called home by her creator early Friday morning, May 21, 2004 from Sunbridge Care Center-Alzheimer's (Paloma) Unite. He told her it was time for a rest because he needed her to do some baking-pumpkin bars, applesauce cookies and banana bread. He needed her help watching over the children to help them feel special and loved-he knew it was a job he couldn't do alone so he sent for his angel with a twinkle in her eye and a smile of gold. She will forever be in our hearts and in our minds and we know she will always be watching over us.

Hilda was born on April 3, 1911, in Loogootee, Ind., the ninth of 10 children, to William Frank and Neva Gay Hall Withers. When she was very young the family moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, where they engaged in the diary business. They later moved the dairy into Woodstock, Ill., where she met and married Frank Meyer, to this union was born a daughter, Norma. They were later divorced. Hilda worked for Alumite Corp in Woodstock and later moved in to Chicago, Ill., where she worked for Bunte's Candy and during World War II worked at a defense plant. She met and married Burgess T. Crandall and his son Burgess, Jr., of whom she was very proud, on June 11, 1944. Burgess and Hilda moved to Rupert in 1947 where she worked alongside her mother-in-law as a cook at Lincoln Elementary School. Hilda also worked at J. R. Simplot in Heyburn and Idaho Potato Processors, Inc. in Burley. Grandma was very patient and loved babysitting her grandchildren, great grandchildren, other people's children and was for a number of years involved in the foster parent program with the State of Idaho.

Hilda is survived by her daughter Norma (Willard) Palmer, Twin Falls; son Burgess T. (Suzanne) Crandall, Tigard, Ore. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren and numerous extended relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, and sisters, and one granddaughter. Hilda's last wishes were for body donation to the University of Utah, Medical College, Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be no service per her request. Any donations should be sent to: Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 6th floor, New York, New York 10001.
