Lloyd A. Carpenter Ex-Mat Champ Dies in Sioux Falls

Lloyd A. Carpenter, 63, Is Dead on Arrival at Local Hospital - A former world’s lightweight wrestling champion died en route to a local hospital Friday night.

Lloyd A. [Abraham] Carpenter, 63, suffered a heart attack at his home at 1311 N. Main Ave. (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), around 11 p.m. He was rushed to a local hospital in a Benz Ambulance but was dead on arrival. Mr. Carpenter won the lightweight wrestling title from Max Brenton* on March 11, 1910. Mr. Carpenter held the title for more than three-and-a-half years before losing it to Walter Keegan on Sept. 5, 1913. Born in Latimer, Iowa, May 18, 1890, Mr. Carpenter married Tillie Oleson in Clarion, Iowa, on May 21, 1910. After serving overseas in the Army during World War I, he moved to Webster in 1919. Eight years later, he moved to Marshall, Minnesota, where he lived for 17 years. A brother, Raymond, preceded him in death. Survivors are his widow; a son, William, Sioux Falls; two brothers, Spencer, Longville, MN, and Walter, Martin, MN and two sisters, Mrs. Wava Kimball, Inwood, Iowa, and Mrs. Ed (Hazel) Schmidt, Webster. The body is at the Benz Funeral Home.

*Original article stated: Max Britton on March 10, 1910, correct info is Max Brenton on March 11, 1910. The family files, include the original ticket to the match, and a post card from Max Brenton discussing the challenge to a match, which is the source of this correction.
