H. P. ROOT DIED SUDDENLY LAST MONDAY
Residents of this community were shocked to hear of the sudden death Monday, April 21st, of Mr. H.P. Root, 79, a long-time resident of Dows. Mr. Root was hanging paper at the residence of Mrs. Mary Kahler at the time he was taken with a heart attack. Mr. Root had finished cleaning the walls, preparatory to hanging the paper and had rushed to his home to get some equipment with which to continue his work. On the way back from his home to the Kahler residence he walked part way with Mr. George Hackbarth and apparently seemed his usual sprightly self. Arriving at the Kahler residence, he apparently became ill almost immediately and sat down in a chair, slumped back, and fell into a coma from which he never regained consciousness. Mrs. John Heiden and Mrs. Alfred DeLano, assisting at the Kahler residence, found him in that position and immediately called Dr. G. E. Schnug. Mrs. Milo Rollene and Mrs. Fay Houck, his daughters were summoned, and he died within a few minutes after their arrival. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Snarr, Thursday, April 24th, from the Methodist church in Dows. Mrs. Corrine Aagesen sang one of Mr. Root's favorite selections; "Sunrise" and Mrs. Bernice Hersman and Mrs. Luella Jacobson sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye". Mrs. Nellie Damerow accompanied them at the piano. Pallbearers were Earl Hill, George Meyer, Wm. Laughlin, Herbert Capellen, Maynard Mills and L.O. Randal. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery with the Halvorson Funeral Home in Charge.
