Velma Hilda Hauge died July 4, 2002, at Belmond Medical Center Hospice. Funeral services were held Monday, July 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Organist was Eldoris Bunnell; soloist was Marilyn Janssen; ushers were Moo Meints and Loren Bamford; interment was at Belmond Cemetery near Belmond. Casket bearers were Roland Kinseth, Dwight Tyrrell, George Eekhoff, Scott Braner, Bill Myers, Bob Cullinan, Jr., and Cecil Mosiman.
Velma Hilda Braner was born February 10, 1918, on her parents' farm east of Belmond, the daughter of Wessel and Magdalene (Mennenga) Braner. She attended Belmond High School and graduated in 1935. Velma then attended and graduated from business college in Chilocothe, Missouri. Velma married Dale Hauge on her parents' farm on June 28, 1941. The couple farmed and raised their children in rural Belmond. Velma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and past member of Immanuel Reformed Church. She worked at the Henderson Law Office, Tomson Insurance, and Bunnell Insurance Agency. She was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed any activity that included her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She especially enjoyed getting together with everyone on family vacations. Velma and Dale also looked forward to annual fishing trips to Lake Winnebegosh in northern Minnesota and wintering in Las Vegas. Some of her favorite pastimes included reading, playing golf and bridge. She loved to bake for her family and as her grandchildren always said, "My grandma makes the best sugar cookies, fudge, and homemade ice cream."
She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Hauge. Those who loved her and will always remember her include her husband of 61 years, Dale Hauge; son, Dennis Hauge of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Monte Shaw and their daughters, Emily and Laura of Chappaqua, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Michael McMillin and their son, Corey of Seattle, Washington; granddaughter, Kim Hauge of Moretown, VI; grandson, Trent Hauge of Indianola, Iowa; one brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Crystal Braner, and one sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Cullinan of Belmond.
