James W. Mariga died July 15, 2002. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 18, at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond with Father David Beckman officiating. Music was provided by Janyce Kluss, organist; and Jon Barrett, soloist. Casket bearers were O'Larry Dorr, Mel Walden, Bernard Ermels, Rich Kling, and Dale Bemrich. Interment was at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.

James William Mariga was born December 15, 1905, in Clarion to John and Anna (VanLanschoot) Mariga. At the age of six his mother died, followed a few years later by his father. Jim, his brothers and four sisters were raised by two aunts in Webster City. St. Thomas Catholic Church in Webster City was built in 1917, and Jim was one of the altar boys at the first Mass. He graduated from Webster City High School in 1924. After high school, Jim moved to Clarion and worked for his uncle, John Fagan, as a carpenter. While in Clarion, he met Josephine Mossman. They were married on September 25, 1928, at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion. To this union two children were born, James E. and Barbara. In 1938, Jim and his family moved to Belmond where he became involved in the gasoline business with Sinclair Oil Company. He continued in that business until 1967 when he retired. Jim and Jo have been members of St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond since 1938, where both have been active over the years. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Belmond Fire Department, and in the 1940's, he was manager of the Belmond Baseball Tomahawk Team. Jim was also one of the first presidents of the Belmond Country Club.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas Mariga; and four sisters, Lucy Nilles, Suzanne Ermels, Helen Horrigan and Catherine Miller. Survivors include his wife, Josephine of Belmond; a son, James E. Mariga of Belmond; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (Mariga) and Fred Schiek of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Mary Jo (Schiek) Youngberg and her husband, Scott of Cedar Rapids, and Patricia Schiek of Minneapolis, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Heather, Justin, and Amanda Youngberg; many nieces and nephews.
