Harold E. Bock, 79, of Belmond died away Friday, January 11, 2002 at the Belmond Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 14, 2002, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Rowan American Legion Post #159 and the Belmond Honor Guard. Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and Jon Barrett, cantor. Ushers were Arthur Benetti, Duane Hess, Al Martin and Larry Bailey. Honorary casketbearers were his True Value Coffee Buddies. Casketbearers were: Rick Lage, Frank Harvey, Keith Harvey, Jim Lage, Roger Harvey and Wayne Behrens.

Harold, the son of Carl and Minnie Kahl Bock, was born December 3, 1922, in Remsen, Iowa. He grew up in the Remsen area where he attended country schools and graduated from Remsen-Union Consolidated School in 1941. He attended the University of Iowa for two years before returning home to farm. Harold entered the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served on the U.S.S. Franklin Roosevelt where duties included patrolling the east and west coasts of the United States during WW II. He returned home in 1946. Harold married Mary Lage on June 14, 1949, at St. Michaels in Kingsley, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Remsen and Kingsley areas where Harold farmed. In 1960, the Bocks moved to Belmond where he continued to farm. Harold eventually turned his farming operation over to his boys, but never really retired. Harold enjoyed traveling, family activities and family campouts. He also loved to have coffee at True Value and tinkering on Allis Chalmers tractors. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He served his church in many capacities, most notably: Parish Grounds Committee, Cemetery Trustee and in the Knights of Columbus. In the last year, Harold was presented with the Lifetime Member Award from the Knights of Columbus for 25 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Frank Harvey; a son-in-law, Cecil Pruitt; one brother, Floyd Harvey and one sister, Avada Mills. Survivors include his wife, Mary; six daughters: Sandy Roetman and her husband, Wayne of Bethany, Missouri; Marilyn Bock of Spencer; Marcia Naber and her husband, Bill of Fostoria; Jeanne Pruitt of Bethany, Missouri; Patty Rouse and her husband, Tim of Ruthven; Sue Schavey and her husband, Harlan of Blue Earth, Minnesota; four sons, Tom and his wife, Cheryl of Belmond; Kenny and wife, Jacki of Belmond; Mark and his wife, Denise of Belmond; Steve and his wife, Donna of West Des Moines; twenty-two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Bierman of Tempe, Arizona; one brother, Dean Harvey and his wife, Sharon of Marcus; a sister-in-law, Verna Harvey of Remsen; a brother-in-law, Ray Mills of Center Point; and numerous other relatives and friends.
