Joseph Negrete, 79, of Belmond died Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery, with graveside military rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and Jon Barrett, cantor. Ushers were Terry Anderson and Arthur Benetti. Honorary casketbearers were: Sonny Greenfield, Jerry Thompson, Don Stoffer, Ed Stoffer, Ray Lowenberg and Wayne Lein. Casketbearers were: Tyler Nelson, Victor Mendizabal, Simon Negrete Jr., Richard Argumedo, Robert Negrete and Richard Kaduce.

Joseph "Joe" Negrete, the son of Simon and Guadalupe (Ramerez) Negrete, was born March 12, 1922, in Walesburg, Colorado. At age 9 he moved to Belmond with his family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Joseph was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in the European Theater of Operation and the South Pacific on board the U.S.S. Dorthea and the U.S.S. Betelgeuse. He drove amphibious landing boats. He returned home in 1945. Joseph married Mary Argumedo on February 26, 1949 in West Des Moines. The couple made there home in Belmond. Joe was employed by General Mills and Central Soya. He retired at age 59. Joe was an avid gardener and liked mowing lawns. He attended seven Navy reunions starting in February 1986.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Belmond; three sons: Frank of Clarion, Dennis and his wife, Beatrice of Belmond, and David and his wife, Kayla of Grimes; four grandchildren: Jesse and his wife, Shawna, Jessica, Brennan, and Brock; two great-grandchildren: Kobe and Vada; 10 brothers and sisters: Jean Schwartz, of Belmond, Jesus Negrete of Belmond, Conie Swanson and her husband, Cecil, of Des Moines, Mary Negrete of San Francisco, Isabelle Negrete of San Diego, Nellie Fleming and her husband, Marvin of Omaha, Nebraska, Simon Jr. and his wife Rosie of Rocklin, California, Ruth Matthews and her husband, Tom of Neptune, Florida, Stella Bougous and her husband George of South Lyon, Michigan, and Robert Negrete of Indiana, and numerous nieces and nephews.
