William "Bill" Goemaat, 70, of Belmond, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at his home in Belmond. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 16. at the Wright Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Chuck Walton officiating. Burial will take place in the Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.
William, the son of Jan and Neeltje (Star) Goemaat, was born on October 24, 1930 in Hilversum, Netherlands. He grew up in the Netherlands where he was educated. He came to the United States in 1950. William was united in marriage to Helen Crum on March 11, 1952 in Hollandale, Minnesota. The couple started farming at Leland, Iowa. They later farmed south of Kanawha. In 1989 they moved to Belmond. William enjoyed traveling, model trains, was interested in history, and was an avid reader. He was a member of Wright Christian Reformed Church of Kanawha. He helped the Belmond Community Care Car as a driver and served as President. He was involved with the American Cancer Society and spoke openly about his cancer.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister-in-law and one niece. William is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Mike Vasey of Grand Island, Nebraska; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jean (Sorenson) Goemaat of Bennett, Iowa and Marv and Mary Goemaat of Belmond; seven grandchildren: Amy, Alex, and Brian Vasey; Will, and Kristina Goemaat; and Justin and Dan Goemaat; one sister, Hinda Hospic of the Netherlands; and a brother, Bas Goemaat of the Netherlands; a step-mother who lives in Switzerland.
