John Chandler Hitchcock was born in Russell, Hamden County, Mass., August 21st, 1803. Died in Northwood, Iowa, February 23rd, 1884, aged eighty years, six months and two days. He was married twice. His first wife was Arvilla Wadsworth, whom he married in Massachusetts in February 1828. She died in Dec. 1839, in Portage Co., Ohio, where he had located in 1829. By this union there were four children, two of whom are living, Mary Ann, the wife of Elhanan Fitts, of West Randolph, Vt., and Clarisa, the widow of Joseph Walhelm, of River Ralls, Wis. In 1841 he married Mrs. Prudence Wadsworth, widow of J. D. Wadsworth. By this marriage he has one child, Arvilla, wife of H. L. Hanman. He moved from Ohio to Wisconsin in 1858, and from there to Bristol, Iowa, in March 1861, and to Northwood in September of the same year, where he has since resided. His surviving wife is now nearly 83 years of age.
