NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Kermit Arlen Trustem, 79, Northwood, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral service for Kermit will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2015, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday at the chapel.

Following the service at the chapel, military honors will be conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood.

Burial will be in the Bristol Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Kermit Arlen Trustem was born on May 2, 1936, in rural Worth County, near Northwood, the son of Edward and Alice (Hanson) Trustem. He attended Brookfield Township elementary school, and also attended Northwood High School. After his schooling he worked at various jobs around the North Iowa area and also in Wisconsin.

Kermit was inducted into the Army on Oct. 30, 1958, at Fort Des Moines, and was with the 4th Infantry Division as a medical specialist and served his country honorably and faithfully until his honorable discharge on Oct. 28, 1960, at Fort Lewis, Washington. After his honorable discharge he farmed around the Northwood area for a few years.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Smith on July 23, 1983, in Loveland, Colorado, and to this marriage three children were born, Erik, Jennifer, and Laura. After their marriage, Kermit worked for Colorado Steel and Wire Co. in Loveland for 14 years as a crane operator until the company quit. Kermit then worked for the Walmart distribution center in Loveland, Colo., until his retirement.

Kermit was a gun enthusiast, historical reenactor and was known as Powderhawk, was in two movies, "Centennial" and "The Mountain Men," and was in the reenactment of the Lewis and Clark expedition traveling into Missouri. Kermit was known to take in stray animals where he loved and cared for them.

He was a member of the American Legion in Glenville, Minnesota, and the Eagles Club in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Jennifer Trustem of Eureka, California, and Laura Trustem of McKinleyville, California; his former wife, Kathryn Trustem of McKinleyville, California; his sister, Roseann (Dennis) Hill of Lake Mills; his nephews, Jerry Hill of Otsego, Minnesota, and Jeffrey (Kim) Hill of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; his niece, Audra (Chris) Stambaugh of St. Charles, Minnesota; three great-nieces and one great-nephew, as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Erik Russell Trustem.
