Obituary for Carolyn Chapman

Carolyn Chapman, age 81, was born Carolyn Winifred Hurd in Mason City Iowa on February 22, 1934. Daughter of father Carroll W. Hurd and mother Dorothy B.(Englet) Hurd. She was raised in Manly Iowa and graduated from Manly High School.

She was a member of the school band and never missed a day of school. Following graduation she attended the Gale Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she was studying to be an air traffic controller. During her studies at Gale Institute the US Navy department came to the school looking to hire administrative assistants for the Navy in Washington, DC. She and a friend accepted the Navy job and moved to Arlington, VA. near Washington, DC.

Later she married Clayton D. Buck of Knox, PA who she met while attending the Gale Institute in Minneapolis and moved to the Buck family farm in Pennsylvania. They later moved to Bruin, PA and had a son Rick L. Buck and daughter Cheryl A. Buck. The family moved to Harmony/Zelienople area of PA and raised her family. Later in life she moved to Hollywood Florida to be near her brother Cliff (Cory) Hurd, daughter Cheryl and granddaughter Nicole.

Later she relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, where she remained until her passing. She had a green thumb and loved her plants, especially her orchids. She would work countless hours in her yard and everyone who visited always commented on how beautiful her backyard was. Her favorite vacation spot was Ocracoke Island, NC. She worked for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, helped with therapy dogs and visited many different rehabilitation centers and television appearances.

Later she was the manager of the Animal Rescue League Thrift store in West Palm Beach. She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, and her brother Cliff (Cory) Hurd.

She is survived by her dog Bailey of West Palm Beach, her Aunt Vi Gaines of Mason City, Iowa, and family, her brother John Hurd, his wife Karen and children in Mason City, Iowa, her sister Sandy and husband Jack and family of Des Moines, Iowa, cousin Dave (Buddy) Cook and wife Susie of Manly, Iowa, her daughter Cheryl (Cher) A. Slater and husband Gary of Butler, PA, her granddaughter Nicole and husband Chad of New Castle, PA and their children, her great granddaughter Montana and great grandson Maddox, and a son Rick L. Buck of Virginia Beach, VA and Kathy. Carolyn will be missed by numerous relatives in Iowa and friends everywhere.

In her later years she was closest to a tight nit group of friends including her neighbor and good friend Rosa, long time friend Les, long time friend Nelson, her friend Allen, friend Gloria and special friend Eddy form Panama City, Panama who talked to her daily and she visited in Panama most recently in February for her 81st birthday. Her ashes will be scattered at sea per her request off her son's boat in Virginia Beach, VA. where she visited each summer.

Some of her favorite memories where attending the Englet family reunion with her daughter Cher and son Rick. She was a good person, loving mother and will be missed by all. A note left from Carolyn: Everyone remember me for the person I am and just being me and the way I lived. Please don't grieve - be happy for me.
