VALBORG MELLEM RITES ARE HELD IN HOME AND CHURCH AT NORTHWOOD

Northwood – Funeral services for Miss Valborg Mellem, 25, were held Friday afternoon at the home on North Fourth Street and at the Synod Lutheran Church on East Central Avenue. The pastor, the Rev. A. J. Torgerson, conducted the rites.
Burial was made in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Miss Mellem died at the home her mother, Mrs. Lewis G. Mellem, Monday evening following an extended illness, heart disease being the cause of her death. When a pupil in the eighth grade of the local schools she had experienced an illness which had left her crippled and her strength had never been fully regained.

Pearl Valborg Mellem was born April 5, 1911, and had lived her entire life in Worth County. Her father, the late Lewis G. Mellem, was a son of Gulbrand O. Mellem, Northwood’s first settler, who located here in 1853. She was baptized May 21, 1911, by the Rev. O. T. Lee and was confirmed November 8, 1925, by the Rev. A. J. Torgerson. She was a member of the Northwood Synod Church.

The illness which came upon her as a child caused her to lose a year at school as she was seven months in an orthopedic hospital in St. Louis. She continued her schooling, however, being graduated from the Northwood High School in 1930. Following that she studied commercial art for three years in the Minneapolis school of art, developing a talent which she possessed to a considerable degree. Continued ill health prevented her from realizing her full ambitions along this line, and in recent months she had been confined to her home.

Surviving are her mother, five sisters, and one brother: Esther, of the Northwood School faculty; Mrs. C. F. Cassidy, Chicago; Agnes, Park Ridge, Illinois; Virginia, teaching at Ionia; Elvira, a member of the 1936 class of graduates of the Northwood high school, ad Lewis, a junior in the local high school.
