Alto H. Backhaus, 82, Hanlontown, died Thursday, January 10, 1985, at a Manly nursing home.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Robert Bresemann officiating. Burial was in the Grafton Cemetery.

Born November 20, 1902, in rural Manly to John and Anna Muller Backhaus, he attended rural schools near Manly, then Manly High School. On June 4, 1938, he married Mildred Schauer in Grafton. They farmed west of Manly, then later that year moved to Hanlontown. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Hanlontown Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, Hanlontown; two sons, John and Stanley, both of Manly; one sister, Laura (Albert) Meyer, Manly; two brothers, Harry of Manly and Harlon of Ames; and four grandchilren, Brent, Kara, Shawna, and Kyla Bachhaus of Manly.
