NORTHWOOD, IOWA — Roy Wilmer Gentz, 86, of Northwood, died Wednesday (April 29, 1998) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Alf Merseth officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S. Northwood, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Roy Wilmer Gentz was born on December 19, 1911, in rural Worth County, Iowa, near Grafton, the son of William and Mathilda (Hanson) Gentz. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, Northwood.He attended and received his education in the Otranto School system. After completing his schooling, he helped his parents on the family farm near Miltonville, before moving four miles west of Northwood and then moving east of Northwood where he continued to help his parents farm.
He was united in marriage to Caroline Thompson on October 4, 1936, in Northwood. After their marriage he continued to farm for 20 years east of Northwood, before moving back to the Miltonville area where they farmed on the Beulah Saltou farm for 23 years, before moving into Northwood. After moving to Northwood, he was employed on the Dale Jones farm as a farm hand for 11 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed talking to his friends and family on the phone, playing cards, hunting and fishing.
He was a member of the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Caroline Gentz, of Northwood; four children, Junette Burrier and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; Viola Samuelson and her husband, Fred, of Nevada, Iowa; Violet Baldwin and her husband, Roger, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Roger Gentz and his wife, Eloise, of Northwood; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Gentz and his wife, Esther, of Northwood and Raymond Gentz and his wife, Dorothy, of Northwood; three sisters, Wilma Thompson and her husband, Olaf, of Lake Mills; Florence Bottleman, of Northwood; and Dorothy Low and her husband, Russell, of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Arthur Gentz.
