Alma Bertha Olson 1906-1998

NORTHWOOD, IOWA — Alma Bertha Olson, 91, of Northwood, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, in Northwood, with the Rev. Mark F. Bents officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

The family of Alma Bertha Olson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church Radio Broadcast fund in her memory.

Alma Bertha Olson was born on December 11, 1906, in Mower County, Minnesota, near Austin, the daughter of Peter and Augusta (Weber) Penning. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the German Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minnesota.

She attended and received her education in the Myrtle County School System. After completing her schooling, she helped her family on the family farm. She also was a housekeeper for a family in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to William Olson on August 7, 1926, at the German Lutheran Church in Northwood. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1972.

After their marriage, they lived in Northwood where Alma continued to do housekeeping for various families in Northwood.

She enjoyed making quilts and blankets for First Lutheran Church, flowers, and gardening.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Mary's Circle in Northwood.

Survivors include a daughter, Almira Felland and her husband, Roy, of Northwood; three grand-children, James Felland, of Northwood, Dennis Felland, of Nora Springs, and Tom Felland, of Northwood; two brothers, Erhart Penning and his wife, Hazel, of Austin, Minn., and Ervin Penning, of Stacyville; one sister, Elsie Martin of Troy, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; special family, Jacqueline and Howard Erdmann, of Northwood; and James and Virginia Hanson, of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Benhart and Arnold Penning; one sister, Martha Wolff; and a special friend, Gunda Weidler.
