Elmer A. Helgeland, 87, of Northwood, died Saturday (Feb. 24, 1996) at the Americana Health Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Northwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, U.S. Highway 65 South, Northwood. Further visitation will be one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church.
Elmer was born Sept. 19, 1908, the son of Andrew S. and Ingeborg (Nelson) Helgeland on the family farm west of Northwood. He was baptized and confirmed at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church, Northwood. Elmer attended Hartland No 3 School and Northwood High School. He farmed west of Northwood until 1942 when he moved to a farm east of Northwood.
On March 18, 1937, he married Dorothy Wright in Northwood.
Elmer's enjoyments in life were his family, making jewelry, traveling, going to the cabin and coffee with the gang. His activities also included Lion's Club and the Republican Party. He was a director of the Northwood State Bank.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Northwood; one son, Keith, and his wife, Sheila, of Arvada, Colo.; one son-in-law, Dale Jones, of Northwood; three granddaughters, Angela Wilkins and her husband, Michael, of Mason City, and Kirsten Karian and Sarah Helgeland, both of Westminster, Colo.; one brother, Robert, of Northwood; and one sister, Gladys Bogue, of Manly.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janice Jones; one brother, Sander; and two sisters, Viola Torgerson and Rosella Helgeland.
