ELAINE MARIE SVOBODA STEVENS
NORTHWOOD - Elaine Marie Svoboda Stevens, 90, passed away Saturday (June 30, 2001) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Northwood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Elaine was born Aug. 1, 1910, in Verdigre, Neb., to William James and Jessie Ellen (Smith) Svoboda. The family lived in Omaha, Neb., from 1911 to 1918, and they returned to Verdigre, where she graduated from high school in 1928.
On July 24, 1928, she was united in marriage with Livingston George Stevens and the couple began farming west of Verdigre. Three children were born in Nebraska: Lois, George and Alan. In 1937 they moved to Iowa, where their youngest child, David, was born. They farmed east of Northwood until they retired in 1968 and built a new home in Northwood.
Elaine was a member of the Northwood United Methodist Church, the Northwood Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active in church circles and in her community. She was an avid reader, lover of nature and took great joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Elaine is survived by her brother, William M. Svoboda, of Battle Creek, Nebraska; her children, Lois and Clyde Hill of Huxley, George and JoAnn Stevens of Longmont, Colorado, Alan and Mavis Stevens of Northwood, and David and Anne Stevens of Northwood; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Livingston; her parents; a sister, Eunice Havlicek; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Elaine Stevens.
