MAY E. HOUSTON

KENSETT, IOWA - May E. Houston, 102, a resident of Kensett for over 70 years, died Saturday (March 24, 2001) at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, with the Rev. Selmer Hernes of the Bethany Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.

May was born in Tipton on March 17, 1899, the daughter of Joseph and Ida (Schultz) Hinote. She was a graduate of the Little Falls, Minn., High School in 1918 and taught at several elementary schools in the Randall and Cushing, Minn., area.

She married Dewey Houston and they lived in Bowlus, Minn., before moving to Kensett in 1925. She returned to teaching in rural schools near Kensett after the death of her husband in 1945. May then worked in the Hot Lunch Program at Kensett Public School, retiring in 1964.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kensett, the Friendship Garden Club in Kensett and the Royal Neighbor Lodge.

May is survived by two daughters, Joyce Frederiksen and her husband, Lewis, of Ames, and Donna Luchan and her husband, John, of Ames; two granddaughters, Sherry Leydens of West Des Moines and Karen Stephan and her husband, Scott, of Ames; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and nine sisters and brothers.
