NORTHWOOD, IOWA -- Douglas Arthur Pangburn, 90, formerly of Northwood, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Casa Grande, Arizona.

A memorial service for Doug and his wife Florence will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 201 Franke St. in Joice.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A private family inurnment will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery at Northwood on Friday. Members of the V.F.W. Post 6779 will be honorary pallbearers.

Doug was born on Jan. 2, 1913, the son of Samuel and Francis (Fischer) Pangburn. At the age of three, his mother died during the flu epidemic. When he was six, his father married Mary Helen White Pangburn. She was a loving mother to him. He attended the University of Iowa and returned to Northwood and worked at the Northwood Anchor.

In June of 1940 he married Florence Madsen at her parents' farm in Myrtle, Minn. They made their home in Wall Lake, Iowa until he was called to duty for three and a half years during World War II. Following the war, Doug and Florence returned to Northwood and both owned and operated Doug's Market. In 1963, they sold the market and he worked as an appliance manager at Tempo and Kmart until his retirement.

Doug and Florence were married for 62 years and always enjoyed travel and socializing together. It was their wish to have one memorial service and be buried at the same time.

He was survived by his wife, Florence Pangburn, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; son, Craig Pangburn, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Richard Hrubetz; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dr. Walter Harris, of Canada.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Phyllis Harris.
