John "Jack" M. Walding 1922-2012

John "Jack" M. Walding,, 90, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, followed by burial. Visitation will be one hour prior to services today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of John A. Gentleman Mortuaries in Omaha.

Jack was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of John R. and Loretta (O'Shonessy) Walding. He graduated from Central High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged.

Jack married Arlene Bartels on Oct. 24, 1947, in Sioux City.

Jack was employed at Great Northern Railroad for six years. He was a longtime employee of Roberts Dairy. In retirement, he worked part time for the landscaping department at Dakota Dunes Country Club.

In his youth and throughout his life, Jack enjoyed and participated in recreational softball, bowling, golf, fishing and hunting. He competed as an amateur welterweight for Sioux City Golden Gloves. He was a longtime member of the Siouxland Barber Shop Chorus.

Jack was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.

Survivors include his dedicated son, Mike (Roxanne) Walding; beloved granddaughter, Bridget Walding; grandchildren, Laura Walding and Michelle (Tom) Craig; and a great-grandson, all of Omaha; a brother, Ed of Rochester, Minn.; a sister, Margaret Closner of Des Moines, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife and companion of 64 years, Arlene; his parents; a brother, Dick; and a sister, Mary Jean.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Visiting Nurse Association-Hospice in Omaha or Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City.
