Gary C. Schaner, 58, of Vermillion, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion. Condolences may be posted online at www.koberfuneralhome.com.

Gary was born on July 26, 1954, in Sioux City, to James C. and Jeannine Schaner. He grew up in the Leeds community of Sioux City. He graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1972. He was employed at Hy-Vee in Vermillion for 24 years.

He loved fishing, hunting, reading, history, listening to music, spending time at the family cabin, and spending time with his kids and family. He was very dedicated to his work and was successful at whatever position he held. He enjoyed traveling toward the end of his life and spent time outside of the country, which he had always wanted to do.

Gary is survived by his son, Eric Schaner of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his daughter, Jenny (Isaac) Druin of Vermillion; his fiancee, Teresa Johnson of Vermillion; his sister, Deb (Tom) McKee and family of Elkhorn, Neb.; and his brothers, Dale (Janet) Schaner and family of Minneapolis, Gregg (Monica) Schaner and family of Columbus, Ohio, and Dean Schaner and Dr. Harold Waldrep, both of Houston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to be made to the American Heart Association National Center, 7272 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75231.
