Thomas Cunningham passed away on January 10, 2001, in Anthon, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 2 days.

A vigil wake service was held on Friday, January 12, at Armstrong Chapel in Anthon. The funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon with the Rev. Mark Harrington officiating. Burial with military honors from the American Legion McNiff Post #389, Anthon, was held in Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were John O’Connell, Jim Wood, Jack Wood, Jim Cunningham, Mark Groth and Bob O’Connell.

Thomas Edward Cunningham was born April 8, 1913 at Danbury, Iowa, the son of James and Mary Elizabeth (Maguire) Cunningham. AS a young child he moved with his family to the Anthon, Iowa area where he grew up and was educated. He served his country during World War II with the United States Army from June 3, 1942 until January 8, 1946.

On June 10, 1953, Tom was united in marriage to Veronica Schiernbeck at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon where he remained an active member. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 37 years as a lineman and foreman and served as the Anthon policeman for 16 years.

Those survivors left to cherish Tom’s memory include Veronica, his wife of 47 years; two daughters Virginia Cunningham of Anthon, Iowa and Donna Cunningham of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons and their wives, Tim and Kathy Cunningham of Smithfield, Virginia, and Pat and Julie Cunningham of Sioux City, Iowa, four grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Bennett and her husband, Don of San Diego, California, and Anna Sadler of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Joe and Carol Cunningham of Correctionville, Iowa and Frank and Edna Cunningham of Anthon, Iowa, and one sister-in-law Ruth Cunningham of Trenton, New Jersey; along with several nieces and nephews, neighbors and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Maurice and two sisters, Marcella Wood and Gilda Reinbold.
