Francis "Danny" Nyreen, 95, of North Sioux City, SD, passed away surrounded by his family on August 27, 2024 at a local care center. A funeral service will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Ark United Methodist Church, Southern Dakota Complex, 120 Gateway Dr., North Sioux City, SD (Behind the North Sioux City Post Office). Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Graceland Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, IA.
Danny was born on January 16, 1929 in Olmstead County, MN to Cecil and Leona (Levin) Nyreen. He graduated from Leeds High School and joined the Iowa National Air Guards at the age of 17 for 7 years His unit was activated in 1951-1952 during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Arlene Velda Buchholz, on February 24, 1951.
Danny was a member of Ark United Methodist Church, where he served in many programs. He had a beautiful voice and could sing and play the guitar. Danny was an active member of the McCook Lake Izaak Walton League. He loved animals and had a horse. He jokingly stated that he couldn't afford both, so he had to trade his horse in for Arlene! Danny was a professional truck driver for 43 years. He was proud of his many safe driving awards. Danny believed in service to his country and to others and served as a North Sioux City police officer for 15 years. During his life, he raised mink, silver fox, chinchillas, and show rabbits. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and gardening. He made his own salsa, spaghetti and BBQ sauces.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Arlene, of 73 years, sons Robert (Cheryl) and Roger (Mary) of Alcester and daughters Carolyn (Randy) Buller of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Judy Shelburg of Sioux Falls, SD, brother Ronnie (Myrna) of Virginia Beach, VA, 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary, age 7, daughter-in-law Mary (Roger), his parents, Cecil and Leona, two brothers, Dale and Gary, and sister, Betty.
