Merl Raphael Jones, 1908 - 1965

Funeral services for Merl Raphael Jones, 57, Anthon civic leader, who died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness, were held Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon with Rev. A.M. Conlon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Walter Funeral Home. Graveside military rites were conducted by McNiff Post 389, American Legion.

Mr. Jones was a well-known soil conservationist and had been with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service for over 30 years. At Anthon he was active in community affairs, especially Boy Scouts.

He was born February 21, 1908, at Hartley, Iowa, and moved with his family to Story City in 1921. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames and lived in Winner, South Dakota, before coming to Anthon 19 years ago. He married Marie Castleman November 23, 1937, at Hamburg.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society of Anthon, the Sioux City Amateur Radio Club and was a member of Phi Kappa national social fraternity at Ames. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include the widow, four sons, Roger of San Francisco, California, Donald of Sioux City, Lawrence of Iowa City and Robert of Anthon, his mother, Mrs. Iva Jones of Story City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raphael S. Jones.
