1 July 1948

John Franzen, age 80, died at his home in Anthon on June 21, 1948.

Born near Maquoketa, Iowa, October 13, 1867, the eldest in a family of eleven children of George an Anna Wilke Franzen. These early settlers made the trip across the state in a covered wagon where the father had homesteaded near Kingsley. Thus the deceased has seen the vast changes in Woodbury County where he has spent nearly seventy-five years. He was married in Sioux City, Iowa, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church to Mary Flynn, on June 25, 1907. Four children were born to this union, Mrs. Wayne (Alice) Camarigg of Correctionville, Mrs. Elmer (Inez) Groth of Moville, and Mrs. Madge Kipf of Sioux City.

An infant son, John Bernard, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Daniels and Mrs. Kate Rand, preceded him in death.

The wife, daughters and eleven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Amos Wright and Mrs. Harry Martin of Sioux City, four brothers, Joe and Ed of Sioux City, Ben of Kingsley, and William of Pierson, survive.

The family lived on various farms in the Moville, Kingsley and Correctionville vicinities, moving to Anthon where they have resided the past ten years. Two years ago in August, Mr. Franzen accompanied his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Camarigg, and enjoyed a week's visit with relatives at his boyhood home in eastern Iowa. He had not been there for thirty-five years. Although his health has been failing he was not confined to his bed and was not taken critically ill until Thursday evening. He seemed to rally somewhat Sunday but passed quietly away Monday at 5:10 a.m.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon with Rev. A. Conlon officiating. Burial was in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery in Anthon under direction of Hudgel Funeral Service.
