Early Pioneer Goes To Reward

John Flemming, for Nearly 80 Years
Resident of This Vicinity, Buried at Anthon Tuesday

John Flemming one of the pioneers of this territory, and father of the Misses Anna and Clara and Paul Flemming of Correctionville, was born in
Waldon, West Prussia/ December 31, 1842 and died at his home here Sept. 28, 1829, aged 86 years, 8 months and 27 days. He was the fourth child of
a family of fifteen children and came to this country with his parents in 1855 at the age of 12 years. He grew to manhood near Princeton, Wis., casting his first vote there for Abraham Lincoln. In the fall of 1868, he married Miss Roselia Zaske and moved first to Independence, Iowa, coming here in the following year. There was very little of this town of Correctionville then and he has seen the locality develop into its present prosperous stage. He settled on a farm near here and by hard work and honest effort acquired little by little a comfortable home and became one of the much respected citizens at this neighborhood.

To Mr. and Mrs. Flemming were born seven children, six of whom are still living. His wife preceeded him to the great Beyond seven years ago.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss one brother and three sisters, six children: Mrs. Mary Weber and Mrs. Agnes Fredricks of Sioux City; John of Harrington, Wash.; Paul, Anna and Clara of Correctionville; eighteen grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends who will miss his helpful advice and pleasant ways.

He homesteaded the place where his son, Paul, now lives and where he, himself, lived until about ten years ago when he retired from active work and built the home Just north of the Flemming gravel pit which he occupied with his daughters, Misses Clara and Anna. He has lived on his place constantly since 1871.

In the passing of Mr. Flemming it can be truthfully said the community has lost a loyal and faithful friend, the children a loving father and wise counsellor.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning, October 1, from St. Joseph's Catholic church at Anthon, Rev. Father Hurley officiating with interment at St. Joseph’s cemetery there.
