ANTHON, Iowa -- Joseph R. Barnas, 78, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Anthon, died Friday, Jan. 24, 1997, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Hot Springs.

Funeral Mass services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church in Hot Springs, with the Rev. Alan Rosenau officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Anthon, with the Rev. David Hogan officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Barnas was born April 29, 1918, in Pender, Neb. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Neb., and graduate school at Colorado State.

He taught math and science in Nebraska, Alaska, Iowa and Minnesota for 43 years, retiring from St. Paul, Minn. He was the founder of the Hot Springs Village Stargazers' Society Barnas Observatory and started a tutoring program at Jessieville Public Schools in Hot Springs.

Mr. Barnas was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Hot Springs Village Knights of Columbus and the Hot Springs Elks Lodge and a former member of the Hot Springs Village Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Barnas of Hot Springs; two sons, James of Portland, Ore., and Joseph F. of Minneapolis.; a daughter and her husband Julie and Michael Kip of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, George of Wilber, Neb.; a sister, Lillian Randall of Colwich, Kan.; a grandchild, Tyrrell Barnas; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Bobby Fine, Michael Keane, Robert Hamilton, Lloyd Wetsel, Karl Fisher and Billy Ward.

Memorials may be given to the Hot Springs Diaylasis Center or the Garland County Boys and Girls Club.
