DEATH CLAIMS JAMES CUSSEN

Former Retail Store Buyer Succumbs to Brief Illness

James F. Cussen, 85, 420 W. Second street, former buyer for Davidson Bros. Co. and the T. S. Martin Co., died Monday afternoon at his home after a short illness.

Mr. Cussen was born February 2, 1861, at Enniskillen County, Fermanagh, Ireland. He observed his 85th birthday Saturday.

Mr. Cussen came to the United States in 1878 and, after living for some time in New York and Chicago, came to Sioux City in 1884. He was one of the first employes of the Ben Davidson store where he became a buyer. He later was employed by the T. S. Martin firm in a similar capacity.

On January 6, 1886, he married Miss Alma K. Munchrath, daughter of one of Sioux City's pioneers, Frederick Munchrath. The latter Came to Sioux City in 1858 and was the proprietor of the first book store here at 611 Fourth Street, present site of Martin's store. The Munchraths traveled here from Dubuque in an oxcart.

Mr. Cussen Was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1914, and by two sons, Fred and James.

Survivors include four sons, Edward, John, Robert and Felix; two daughters, Mrs. J. C. (Gertrude) Greve and Mrs. J. L. (Kathleen) Lindenmeyer; 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the O'Toole-Gunn funeral home.

Funeral services for James F. Cussen, 85, 420 W. Second Street, who died Monday at his home after a short illness, will be at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Boniface Catholic church. Rev. Frederick Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

The body was taken Tuesday to the residence. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tonight. Pallbearers will be A. J. Boisvert, Daniel E. Duggan, W. T. Hayes, L. W. D. Melicek, John H. Bohm, and Victor H. Cooper.

The O'Toole-Gunn funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
