Mary Ann Godfrey, daughter of George and Mary Ann Godfrey, was born in Compton Dundon, England on August 9, 1862. At the age of 30 she was married to Arthur Witcombe and to this union three sons were born. Two of them died in infancy and Ernest remains to mourn her passing.

In 1908 the family came to America to make their home, but within three years' time the husband died. Mrs. Witcombe and her son carried on farming in and near Washta vicinity till 12 years ago when they moved to Washta. About six months ago Mrs. Witcombe was taken seriously ill and passed away at a nursing home in Cherokee. December 18 at the age of 88 years. Besides her son, she leaves a
brother Joseph in Australia. Four brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. Witcombe was honored among her friends for her integrity and industry.

Services were conducted in Washta Methodist church, on Thursday, Dec. 21, with the Rev. Roscoe C. Jerrell in charge. Mrs. Bert Stratton and Mrs. Nels Eubank sang two numbers with Mrs. Paul Carlton accompanying.

Burial was in Goodhope cemetery, southwest of Washta.
