Alfred S. "Al" Boykin, 81, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2022, at home surrounded by family.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Graceland Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be directed to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Al was born on May 23, 1941, in South Sioux City to George and Louvenia (Pratt) Boykin. He grew up in South Sioux City and attended South Sioux City schools, graduating in 1959. He went on to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University for one year.

In 1964, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska. Following his military service, Al returned to Sioux City.

He worked with many people in the Siouxland area, including five years with Siouxland Community Action Agency; 14 years with the Sioux City Parks & Rec Department; and 27 years driving school buses for the Sioux City School District until his retirement. Al took great pride in providing the kids he transported a safe and welcoming environment, and acted as a mentor and role model to the children he met through the years.

On June 27, 1992, he married Marsha Andersen in Sioux City.

In his spare time, Al enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially his annual fishing trips to Canada with his brother, George. He also enjoyed watching Western films and cheering on his Nebraska Cornhuskers as a loyal fan. He could always be found dancing, singing, and humming throughout the day; music was a pillar of his personality from a very young age. Al was a deeply spiritual man, and had a strong spiritual foundation built from a young age as he grew up in the church with his family.

He was a wonderful cook, and was known for his famous ribs! He coached and was an umpire for the Challengers little league baseball league for a number of years, and also played pitcher in softball league for many years. Al had a great sense of humor and always aimed to put a smile on everyone's faces. He was a selfless man, and always put the needs of others before his own. He was endlessly devoted and loving to his wife and family.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha Boykin; seven children Alfred Jr., Jeanette, Mitchell, Heather, Joyce, Darrell, and Bobbetta; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brother, George Boykin (Michele); and sister, Mary Helen Fields.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings Jeanette, Donald, Gene, and Gary; brother-in-law, Dr. Mark Fields; and sister-in-law, Bernie Boykin.
