Team Drags Farmer over Rough Ground on Sharp End Plow

Horses run away, team drags farmer over rough ground on sharp plow end, burying flank of plow deep in Weber's abdomen.

With the flank of a plow buried in the lower part of his abdomen, Charles Weber, owner of the famous Lum Hollow Stock Farm, four miles east of Holly Springs, Woodbury County was dragged 10 rods by a pair of runaway colts on Monday afternoon, receiving injuries which caused his death at 10:00 last night.

Weber and his hired man were plowing in a field near his home when the adjusting gear of the patent plow broke and as he was stooping in front of the plow, one of the colts slipped its bridle and both colts ran away.

Weber was knocked to the ground and the flank of the plow caught him in the lower part of the abdomen, burying itself in his intestines and dragging him on its point until the runaway team collided with a fence and stopped.

Hurrying to his assistance the hired man pulled Weber from the plow and Dr. F. W. Glann was summoned. Seeing that the injuries were extremely dangerous, Dr. Glann summoned surgeons from Sioux City and everything possible was done to save Weber's life.

Mr. Weber was one of the best known and most prosperous farmers and livestock raisers of Woodbury County. He always exhibited fine cattle at the Interstate Fair here and at the State Fair in Des Moines, frequently capturing first prizes.

He is survived by a wife and eight children, all of whom were at his bedside when the end came. The funeral will take place from the residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be in the German City Cemetery at Holly Springs.
