Ex-Mayor of Pierson Dies

PIERSON, Iowa - Herman Carl Rock, 83, who had been active for many years in Pierson community affairs, died May 12 at a Kingsley nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. May 15 at the United Methodist Church here. The Rev. Forest M. Lay will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Pierson under direction of the Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home of Kingsley.

Mr. Rock was born Dec. 24, 1890, at Rock Branch, Iowa, and married Ethel Glover March 3, 1934, at Sioux City.

A John Deere implement dealer in Pierson for many years, Mr. Rock also farmed in the community. He was on the Pierson Town Council for 15 years and served as mayor for 12 years. He also served on the school board for many years.

He was a longtime director of the Farmer's Saving Bank at Pierson, chairman of the Woodbury County Red Cross War Fund and a 50-year member of the Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Herman "Jim" Jr. of Pierson; two daughters, Mrs. William (Mina) Koch of Pierson and Mrs. Garry (Venona) Johnson of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Hurtha Rock of Pierson; two brothers, Louis and Henry, both of Pierson, and seven grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Rock's name for the Pierson United Methodist Church organ fund.
