Max G. Flathers, 81, Sioux City, died Wednesday, May 8, 1996, at Sunrise Retirement Community after a long illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Reformed Church with Dr. Louis Lotz and the Rev. Doug Tensen officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery at Rock Branch, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Morningside Funeral Home.

Mr. Flathers was born Dec. 17, 1914, at Clear Lake, S.D. He moved to Smithland, Iowa, in 1915 and to Rock Branch in 1927.

On June 2, 1937, he married Vera I. Klingensmith at the home of her parents, rural Moville, Iowa. A farmer, he lived on the Flathers family homestead in Rock Branch until moving to Sioux City in 1994.

Mr. Flathers was a member of Rock Branch United Methodist Church and joined Morningside Reformed Church after moving to Sioux City. He was a member of the Fairfield Cemetery Board, Woodbury County Fair Board, and Bicentennial Wagon Train. He enjoyed working with horses.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy and her husband, Rev. Ray Howland of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a son, Ben and his wife, Bonnie Flathers of Correctionville, Iowa; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters, and a sister, Lois Evans of Mentor, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ben.
