MERRILL, Iowa - Charles Edward Ashley, 71, of Merrill died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Anthon United Methodist Church in Anthon, Iowa. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a time of remembrance at 7:30 p.m., at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.

MERRILL, Iowa - Charles Edward Ashley, 71, of Merrill passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Monday, Oct 16, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Anthon United Methodist Church in Anthon, Iowa, with the Revs. Mike Inman and Vickie Steffes officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion McNiff post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a time of remembrance at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Charles Edward Ashley was born Nov. 21, 1934, in Leeds, Iowa, the first son of Marvin and Dorothy (Court) Ashley. He grew up in Anthon and attended Anthon High School. He graduated from Anthon High School on May 20, 1953. He served from 1957 to 1959 with the U.S. Army in Anchorage, Alaska. He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1963.

He was united in marriage to Connie Lewis on Jan. 15, 1961. The couple were blessed with three wonderful children, JoLynne, Tim and Tom. He worked for Quaker Oats in Anthon until his transfer to Hancock, Minn. He and his family returned to Anthon, where he began working for Terra Chemical International in Anthon and was transferred to Merrill until his retirement in 2000.

He enjoyed bowling, golfing, tinkering in the garage, woodworking, writing short stories and spending time with his four grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Connie of Merrill; a daughter, JoLynne Reimert of Anthon; a son and his wife, Tim and Terri Ashley of Ames, Iowa; a son, Tom Ashley of Merrill; four grandchildren, Brittany Reimert of Anthon, Anthony and Anna Ashley of Ames, Iowa, and Sam Ashley of Holstein, Iowa; three brothers, Bill (Betty) Ashley of Mapleton, Iowa, Charlie (Diane) Ashley of Woodbine, Iowa, and Art (Dee) Ashley of Anthon; four sisters, Beverly (Les) Hueser of Hubbard, Iowa, Jean (Rich) Petersen of Anthon, Joyce (Cal) Gothier of Anthon and Sheryl Ashley of Anthon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by her his parents and an infant grandson, Mason Ashley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice Program.
