MADRID, Iowa | Merlene G. Flynn, 78, of Madrid passed away Nov. 14, 2013, in Davenport, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Madrid. Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Cemetery at Anthon, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Sundberg- Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid.

Merlene was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Oto, Iowa, to Mervin and Helen (Dolan) Jackson. She graduated from Oto High School in May 1953, and married Donald J. Flynn in June. She attended Wayne State (Neb.) Teachers College, earning her teaching certificate in 1955.

Her first position was in Dixon County, Nebraska’s one room country schoolhouse. She returned to Wayne to complete her two-year teaching degree in 1959. Merlene attended Drake University and completed her B.S. in 1970. She taught elementary school for Woodward Granger School System for 28 years, retiring in 1994.

Her children and grandchildren are Mark (Jennifer Johns), Sean and Sarah; Jeanne Holmes (Chris), Katie and Kelsey; Paul (Erin O’Neill), Megan Welsh (Justin), Andrew and Ryan; Julia Sheehy (Kirk), Stephanie and Kim.

She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and lifetime member of National Education Association. She was a charter member of Swede Point Questers Club, belonged to Phi Epsilon Beta Kappa, Iowa Button Assoc., National Button Assoc., Iowa Genealogy Society, and Woodbury County Genealogy Society. She was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church in Madrid.

Merlene spent her retirement summers enjoying their lake home and family gatherings there. She also enjoyed bridge club, swimming, cruises, snow skiing, reading and researching genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, Don; children, Jeanne, Paul, Julia and their families; and her nieces and nephews.
