Betty Callaghan Towne 1929 - 2017

Betty May Callaghan Towne, 87, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Smithland, died peacefully Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Calif., due to acute respiratory failure. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Betty was born on May 8, 1929, to Carl Sylvester and Virginia Ruth (McClaran) Callaghan, in Oto, Iowa. She was confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hornick, Iowa. Betty graduated from Smithland High School, where she played basketball.

Betty married Marlin D. Towne in Iowa on Feb. 9, 1951, and they later divorced. She was the mother of Cynthia, Kim, Terri, and Del Towne. Betty and her family moved to San Diego in 1957. She worked for Moody’s in San Diego for many years and was a full-time homemaker. Betty served as a mother to her grandchildren, Tricia and James. She was also very involved in raising her grandchildren, Jeremy and Bianca.

Betty enjoyed gardening, baking, and cooking. She was an excellent cookie baker. Betty was an avid Padre fan. She loved the variety of pets that graced her home over the years. Betty enjoyed playing cards. She loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially during the holidays. Betty enjoyed going to Bible study at her grandson’s, Jeremy, home. She attended Hope Lutheran Church in San Diego.

Betty is survived by her children, Cynthia Towne of Port Angeles, Wash.; Kim Towne, Terri Towne, and Del Towne, all of San Diego; her sister and brother-in-law, Fern and Dick Struble of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren, Jeremy, Sanya, Bianca, Tricia, and James; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Magnolia, Adam, Jonathan, Madelynn, Joshua, Logan, Melanie, and Annabelle; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty was preceded into death by her parents; her grandparents; and a nephew, Scot Struble.

The family would like to thank the nurses, staff, and physicians in the ICU at Grossmont Hospital for their exceptional care of Betty during her final days.
