Richard Clarence Mayer

Dakota Dunes -- Richard Clarence Mayer, 75, of Dakota Dunes, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, at a Sioux Falls hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation with family present will be one hour prior to service time. The funeral service will be live streamed at https:/youtu.be/EbdfOtUGkDs. Richard was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Sioux City, the son of Clarence B. and Margaret V. (Black) Mayer. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1964.

Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force for seven years and was stationed at the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City.

On Jan. 22, 1966, he married Patricia Parks in Wichita Falls, Texas. To this union, three children were born, Scott, Kelly, and Kim.

Richard worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 25 years until his retirement.

Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the American Legion in Jackson, Neb. Richard enjoyed boating on the river, taking trips to Mexico, and golfing in his later years. He was an avid college and professional football fan and adored his dog, Booker.

Those left to honor his memory are his son, Scott (Kae) Mayer of Farmington, Minn.; daughters, Kim (Jim) Curry of Tea, S.D., and Kelly Sheveland of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren, David, Kyle, McKenna, Riley, Sam, Kaci and Maggie; brother, Mike Mayer of Illinois City, Ill.; sisters, Marilyn (Mike) Mayer of Sioux City, and Cheryl (Les) White of St Mary’s, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. Also, a newly found daughter, Sara Puttmann of Clear Lake, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Judith; and his wonderful dog companion, Booker.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to Wounded Warrior Project or Siouxland Humane Society.
