Irene E. Burnight, 98, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Funeral Mass services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a rosary at 4 p.m. conducted by the Catholic Daughters of America and the Carmelite Guild Board, and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Burnight was born Aug. 1, 1898, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Catherine (Blum) Hitzeman.
She married Thomas Burnight on July 5, 1926, in Akron. He died June 12, 1978, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a member and past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America Ave Maria Court 269, past president and honorary member of the Carmelite Guild Board, a former member of the Good Shepard Home Board, a member of the Catholic Women's League Board and a volunteer at the Bargin Center and the Ladies of Charity. She was the president of the first Deanery of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, for the Sioux City Diocese.
Survivors include her special friends, John and Alice Holck, and their family of Sioux City; and distant cousins.
