Mrs. Hanner, Hornick, Dies of at Age 96

Mrs. Henry Hanner, 96, Hornick, died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital after an illness of about three months.

Mrs. Hanner was a resident of the Hornick area for years.

The former Pollie Kendall, she was born Feb. 27, 1874, near Springfield, Ill.. She was married in Illinois at the age of 20. She and her husband farmed in Illinois for five years before moving to the Hornick area.

Mrs. Hanner was the subject of a Journal feature article Feb. 23, 1969, in which she recalled the trouble she and her husband had with Indians who regularly passed near their Hornick farm.

The farm blocked the Indians regular route, so they retaliated by stealing chickens and burning haystacks, although they never did harm to members of the family, Mrs. Hanner said.

Mr. Hanner died in 1928.

Mrs. Hanner was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church and a birthday club. She also belonged to the Hornick Missionary Club.

Survivors include four sons, Earl and Henry of Hornick, Wayne of Springfield and Vernon of Berkley, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Max (Iola) O'Connell or Sioux city; a sister, Mrs. Nel Olds of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the W. Harry Christy Funeral Home in Morningside.
