Charles T. Ranschau

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - (Died Sioux City) Charles T. Ranschau, 71, of rural Sioux Center died Monday, May 11, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Charles was born Oct. 17, 1937, on the family farm, the son of Ted and Irene (Wyffels) Ranschau. He graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1955. He attained his bachelor of science degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Riley, Kan., and Fort Sill, Okla.

He married Ruthanne McLaughlin on Sept. 7, 1963, in Sioux City. The couple raised their five children and farmed together for the next 45 years south of Rock Valley.

He served as a Eucharistic minister and was on the board of directors at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a township director for the Sioux County Cattle Feeders Association and a 22 -year board member at Rock Valley Farmer's Elevator Company. He received the 2008 Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award from Sioux County Soil and Water Conservation District.

He is survived by his wife, Ruthanne; children, Theresa (Tom) Souvignier of Canton, S.D., Christine Ranschau and her husband, Orin Vonk of Rock Valley, Joseph (Vicki) Ranschau of Rock Valley, Greg Ranschau and his fiancee, Brenda Reinke of Rock Valley and Andy Ranschau and his special friend, Lynne Benedict of Rock Valley; five grandchildren, Ted and Taylor Souvignier, Brittany, Elizabeth and Madeline Ranschau: a brother, David (Barbara) Ranschau of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a sister, Susan (Bill) Bryce of Lawton, Iowa.
