Mary Ann Slate

SIOUX CITY -Mary Ann Slate, 85, of Waukee, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, May 8, 2000, at Village Legacy Point in Waukee, following an illness with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jeremy Wind officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Ceme tery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mrs. Slate was born April 19, 1924, in Remsen, Iowa, to John and Cecilia (Ahmann) Flynn. She moved to Sioux City with her family after graduating from St. Joseph School in Le Mars, Iowa, in 1941.

She married Arnold "Bill" Slate on Jan. 2, 1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City until 1990, when they moved to Waukee. She held a variety of part-time jobs to help support the family.

She was a member of St. Boniface Church in Sioux City and then St. Boniface in Waukee. She enjoyed camping, even still pulling her own trailer, every weekend last year. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always wanting to know "What's going on?"

Survivors include four sons, David (Teresa) Slate of Cambridge, Iowa, Dale (Karal) Slate of Sioux City, Daniel (Sandra) Slate of Queen Creek, Ariz., and William (Linda) Slate of Sioux City; six daughters, JoAnne (Eugene) Potter of Sioux City, Jean Griffin of Owasso, Okla., Jane (Marvin) Whitlock of Waukee, Mary Kay Miller of Linden, Iowa, Laurie (Larry) Scofield and Teresa (Ronald) Lemke, all of Sioux City; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen O'Bryan of Jefferson, Iowa, Carol Hettinger of Atlantic, Iowa, and Rita Flynn of Coon Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Tom Flynn of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and James Flynn of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Joseph Slate; three sisters, Darlene Jacobson, Norma Tague and Cecile Hare; a brother, Robert Flynn; and two sons-in-law, Richard Miller and Tom Griffin.
