WESTFIELD, Iowa (Died Sioux City)-Wilbur Hasenbank, 70, of Westfield passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Dawn Quame officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home -Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Condolences may be sent online to www.carlsen funeralhome.com.

Wilbur Carl Hasenbank was born Nov. 4, 1938, on the family farm near Akron, the son of Carl and Edna (Leckband) Hasenbank. He attended country school near Akron and later Akron High School. Following his schooling, he began his building career. He started working for Younglove Construction in Sioux City, helping build grain elevators in many communities. He also helped his father on the family farm near Akron.

He was united in marriage to Joyce Toben on Aug. 11, 1959, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Later, he did general contracting in the Akron area for a short time. He later worked for Dan O'Brien and Developers and Associates in Elk Point, S.D. and Weinberg Investments in Sioux City. For the past several years, he did general contracting in the Akron and Westfield, Iowa, areas. In 2006, he retired after several decades in contracting and building.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. He enjoyed woodworking and building things out of wood. He could fix and repair just about anything. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 49 years, Joyce of Westfield; six children, David Hasenbank of Merrill, Iowa, Julie and her husband, Milo Hughes of Westfield, Janet Martin of Akron, Mike Hasenbank of Elk Point, Wes Hasenbank of Akron and Melissa and her husband, Keith Rollins of Akron; 16 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers and their wives, Vernon and Kathy Hasenbank of Vermillion, S.D., and Marvin and Linda Hasenbank of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sisters and their husbands, Viola and Eldon "Fritz" Gabel of Akron and Caroline and Robert Gradert of Sioux Center, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, John and Gladys Toben; and a son, Brian Keith Hasenbank.
