CHEROKEE, Iowa -Robert D. Burns, 61, of Cherokee died Monday, May 4, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, Iowa, with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.

Robert Duane Burns was born Nov. 26, 1947, in Cherokee, the son of Duane and Betty (Levin) Burns, He grew up in the Washta, Iowa, and Correctionville area and graduated from Willow Community School in Quimby, Iowa.

He worked at Simonsens in Quimby. After moving to Correctionville, he worked for Les Petersen Oil Company and Correctionville Co-op. He later moved to Holstein, Iowa, and worked for the Holstein Co-op Elevator, returning to Quimby and again working for Simonsens until his retirement. He was a volunteer fireman in Correctionville.

On May 28, 1982, he married Janice O'Connor in Elk Point, S.D.

He enjoyed Larry the Cable Guy, John Wayne, playing cards with his wife and parents and camping. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; his father and mother, Duane and Betty Burns of Washta; 10 children and spouses, Ramona and Greg Carlson of Cherokee, Ora and Chris Dixon of Sioux City, David and Becky Burns of Correctionville, Shelia and Keane Fischer of South Sioux City, Shari Preuss of Sioux City and Amber Burns, Samantha Burns, Devon Burns, Taresa Burns and Ethan Preuss, all of Cherokee; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three sisters, Linda Johnson and Vickie and her husband, Scott Eatinger, all of Sioux City and Suzann and her husband, Joe Griep, of Stockton, Calif.; a brother, Keith Burns, and his wife, Mary, of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dickie Burns.
