SIOUX CITY - Marian Evelyn Nelson, 97, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church, with Daniel Gunther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Marian was born Jan. 24, 1912, in East Grand Forks, Minn., to Daniel and Sarah (Sheriff) Baird. She grew up in the East Grand Forks area and graduated from school there. She later attended nursing school in Canada.

She married Willard E. Nelson on June 19, 1933, in East Grand Forks. He passed away Aug. 17, 1979, in Sioux City. She moved to the Siouxland area with her husband in 1936 and had been a resident here ever since. She was employed as a nurse's aid at St. Vincent Hospital. She was later employed with Martin Department Store for many years.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception Guild and the Catholic Daughters of America. She also taught CCD. classes. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, cooking, baking and flowers.

Survivors include her son, Bruce and Joan Nelson of Carefree, Ariz.; a daughter, Linda and Glen Schlotman of Kingsley, Iowa; grandchildren, Ken, Craig and Brenda Nelson, Kathy Bassman, David and Kirk Schlotman, Debbie Eilers and Troy Schlotman; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Fait of New Port Beach, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons, Steve and Jim Nelson; a daughter, Patricia Nelson; a grandson, Bradley Wickam; and three brothers, Daniel, Hugh and William Baird.
