SIOUX CITY - E. Lucille "Lucy" Thompson, 81, formerly of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 13, 2009, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Private graveside services will be in Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines. Visitation with the family will be 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Lucy was born July 10, 1928, in Lovilia, Iowa, the eldest of four children of Orville and Evelyn Livengood. She was a graduate of Des Moines East High School. She obtained a chemistry degree from the University of Iowa.

She married Don W. Thompson in 1949 and resided in Sioux City for most of her married life. She moved to Des Moines in 1984 and was employed with United Federal Savings Bank.

She was a member of T.T.T., the P.E.O. Sisterhood, St. John's Lutheran Church and the Sioux City Boat Club. A devoted grandmother, she was a proud audience member for countless musical and sporting events. She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins. Some of her happiest memories were of her summer vacations with extended family in northern Minnesota.

She is survived by her daughter, Jill (Rich) Hansen of West Des Moines; a son, Donner Thompson of Urbandale, Iowa; grandchildren, Laura, Allison and Drew Hansen; a brother, Curt (Beth) Livengood of Marion, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Jay W. Mitchell of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Carroll R. Sawin of Lincoln, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents ; her husband, Don W. Thompson; and sisters, Janice Kay Mitchell and Marjorie Sawin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Iowa Chapter and the West Des Moines Community Schools Foundation.
