Randy A. Norris

SIOUX CITY - Randy A. Norris, 63, of Jacksonville, Ill., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at his father's residence in Sioux City.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church in Whiting, Iowa, with the Rev. Reva Karstens officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Randy was bora July 17, 1945, in Sioux City, the son of Ruth (Myers) and George Norris. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1963. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Briar Cliff College and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University.

On April 17, 1965, he married Judy Davidson in Vermillion, S.D. He was in the National Guard and called up to serve in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. He taught at Yankton College for five years. He had taught at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., for the past 24 years. He taught art and art history.

He served on many committees at the college including serving as the chair of the art department and the director of the art gallery. He was on the executive council of the A.A.U.P. and was a past president of the A.A.U.P. He served as an advisor for the student government. He loved to travel with his students to England and Italy to show them the art of Europe.

He loved hunting and was a gunsmith. He entered many shooting competitions. He also enjoyed traditional archery and made his own arrows. He enjoyed painting for himself and also did commissioned works.

He had a pipe collection, he made knives and was a fabulous cook.

Survivors include his son, Buckley of Aberdeen, S.D.; a daughter, Leah Iversen of St. Paul, Minn.; his father, George Norris of Sioux City; his beloved partner, Kay MacClure of Whiting, Iowa; two grandchildren, Sydney and Nate; two brothers and their wives, Mike and Mary Norris of Mankato, Minn., and Greg and Gloria Norris of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Norris
