SIOUX CITY - Diane K. Backman, 68, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, July l, 2009, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Diane was born on April 20, 1941, in Sioux City, to John and Marguerite (O'Dea) Rose. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School.

Diane married Robert Claude Backman on Sept. 20, 1960, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. She worked at the Indian Youth of America as a prevention specialist. It was her passion in life trying to help the youth. She also worked at the Whistlestop Casino for approximately 15 years.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City for many years and more recently, at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Diane is survived by her children, Christine Ayers and fiance, Gary Townsley of Sioux City, Pat Backman and wife, Penny of Yankton, S.D., and Brian Backman of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Melanie Ayers, Mark Ayers Jr. and Alex Hueber; two sisters, Patty Brown and her husband, Dick and Debbie Saylor and her husband, Garrie, all of Sioux City.

Diane was an angel walking amongst us on earth. She blessed so many of us with her inner grace, humor and beauty. She will be missed by all of us every day for the rest of our lives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; and a daughter, Becky.

Pallbearers will be Greg Cabana, Mic Irwin, Zac Saylor, Mark Ayers Jr., Mark Hoefling and Dickie Brown.

Honorary pallbearers will be Stevie Lyman, Josh Boomsma, Bobby Steiner, Jon Saylor, Bart Brown, Alex Huber, Garrett Boardman, Lorie Hembd "Fruzin" and Billy Brown.
