SERGEANT BLUFF - Alice V. Haviland, 92, of Sergeant Bluff died Wednesday, July l, 2009, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.

Graveside services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Alice was born Aug. 24, 1916, in Turin, Iowa, the daughter of Leland and Irene (Bowman) Gross. She lived in Onawa, Iowa; then the family moved to Hornick, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1934. She was a cook in the cafes in Hornick for several years. She moved to Sioux City, where she did some home nursing. In 1950, she moved to Sergeant Bluff, where she was a bookkeeper for the Ballou Brickyard for several years.

She was married to John Haviland of Sergeant Bluff from Oct. 17, 1952, until his death in June 2004.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Jeffrey and Janet Haviland of St. Joseph, Minn.; a granddaughter, Lisa; and a grandson, Kyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sisters; and a brother.
