23 April, 2009SIOUX CITY -- Johneen R. Newberg, 68, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital after a long, valiant fight with cancer.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Chaplain Marie Lykken officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Johneen was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Sioux City, the daughter of John Samuel and Enid F. (Nero) Bolshaw. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. She later attended Western Iowa Tech Community College. Prior to her marriage, she was a key punch operator for I.P.S.
She married Norman G. Newberg on Aug. 26, 1960, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Hinton, Iowa until Norman's death on Dec. 1, 2004. She continued to live on the farm until moving to Sioux City in 2008.
She was a volunteer for Reach for Recovery and served as its regional coordinator. She tutored students in English as a Second Language as well as reading. She was a longtime member of Hinton United Methodist Church and attended Mayflower Congregational Church, where she enjoyed directing their children's choir.
She loved family gatherings and enjoyed their holiday sing-a-longs. Her holiday homemade candies earned her the title of "the candy goddess." She especially loved her grandchildren, nieces and nephews and was affectionately known as Granny Do Good.
She is survived by a son, Eric Newberg and his wife, Lori of Modale, Iowa; a daughter, Dr. Melissa Newberg and her husband, Laurence Lencki of Joliet, Ill.; a brother, Daniel Bolshaw and his wife, Jill of Omaha; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Johnathan; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Kathleen Schietzelt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the American Cancer Society.
